Nallo, Lapland
The mountains in Nallo are around 1,700 and 2,100 m asl, with a typical high-alpine mountain environment. Sweden’s highest summit, the north summit of Kebnekaise (2,099 m asl) is here together with the established Drakryggen (The Dragon’s Spine) and Pyramiden which we hope to be able to ascend during our time here. We’re close to multiple insteps as several of the summits are right next to our hut, Our days are filled with high alpine climbing, steep passages, airy ridge walks and off-piste skiing in guaranteed untouched snow.
Pure Ski Touring only hires IFMGA Mountain Guides
What is a Mountain Guide?
A Mountain Guide is a specially trained and highly experienced professional who is certified by authorities or mountain guide associations. They are considered experts at a high level and are hired to instruct or lead individuals and small groups in mountain environments that require this advanced expertise. The profession of mountain guide originated in the mid-19th century when alpine climbing became recognized as a sport.
IFMGA Certification
The title IFMGA Mountain Guide is reserved for individuals who have received full certification through their country’s national mountain guide association, whose curriculum and training are approved by the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA). Certification is obtained through a rigorous examination process that includes rock climbing, alpine climbing and ski mountaineering. Certification usually takes between three and seven years to complete.
Swedish Mountain Guide Organisation
The Swedish Mountain Guide Organisation (SBO) is Sweden’s only professional organisation for mountain guides. SBO trains and examines guides and offers further training. The organisation promotes the interests of its members nationally and internationally and administers information, fees and meetings. The requirements for authorisation are high and include technical skills, teaching and leadership skills. SBO cooperates with other organisations and is a member of the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA), which gives Swedish guides the right to work internationally according to the federation’s standards.

The Kebnekaise Massif
Nallo is a unique ski touring area a fair way into the Kebnekaise Massif. Our base camp is situated around 45km west of Nikkaluokta in Lapland, and from Nikkaluokta to the nearest town, Kiruna, another 65km. In order to get to our base camp, the Nallo hut, we’ll pass the Tarfala valley and stay a night in the Tarfala hut. From there we’ll have alpine ski touring on our way to Nallo hut which we arrive on day two. There are several glaciers in the Tarfala area, the most well-known being Storglaciären, which also is one of the most studied glaciers in the world. We may both ascend and descend some of the glaciers in the area during our tour.
Accommodation
We arrive at Nikkaluokta Mountain Station around lunch time. Here we’ll change and have the option to leave a rucksack with personal stuff not required on the mountain before we travel onwards with snowmobiles to the Tarfala hut. We stay the first night at the Tarfala hut before we walk onwards deeper into the Kebnekaise massif the following morning. We spend the following four nights at the Nallo hut. Nallo hut has a 20-bed capacity, split over two rooms. We have pre-booked our own room, comprising a wood-burning stove and duvets and pillows on each bed. There is no mobile coverage at Nallo (nearest signal is at the Vista hut).
We prepare all our meals together using the hut’s self-catering facilities, fetch water outside and chop firewood for heating. Breakfast consists of porridge, eggs, bread and various spreads, and dinners will be rustic stews with rice or pasta, followed by dessert. There is always coffee and tea on the boil for those who want it. We make up our own lunch packs from the breakfast supplies. On the way back we walk out from Nallo and the Lapland ranges back towards the Tarfala valley and stay our last night at the Tarfala hut. Our final dinner we spend with the hut guardian who will regale us with interesting stories from the area. On the last day we take the high route down towards “linjen” (“the line”) where we’ll be met by snowmobiles taking us all the way down to Nikkaluokta. At Nikkaluokta we’ve pre-booked showers and change. Before we drive towards Kiruna train station we’ll be served a Souvas burger (plant-based alternatives available) and coffee or tea.

This trip is based on the assumption that guests take the sleeper train from Stockholm C to Kiruna, return. We have pre-booked beds in private sleeping compartments.

At Kiruna we’ll pick you up in a private minibus and drive around 65km westwards to Nikkaluokta. The return journey is by minibus in the afternoon from Nikkaluokta. We drive to Kiruna station in good time for the southbound sleeper train departure.
